Mental Health of Russian Adolescents during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Background: the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions may be particularly harmful for adolescents; however, evidence about changes in adolescent mental health during is inconsistent. The aim was to examine levels of Russian rates substance use pandemic. Participants methods: two cohorts 11–18-year-old adolescents were recruited from Siberian cities 2015–18 ( n = 1774, 47% male) 2020–21 1747, 43% male). completed identical sets questionnaires: Strengths Difficulties Questionnaire, Body Image Eating Distress scale items on tobacco, alcohol drug use. We examined effect cohort, gender age using linear models. Results: depression, anxiety psychosomatic symptoms, total problems higher than cohort. Increases emotional symptoms similar both genders, whereas increases smoking significant only among girls. Conclusions: present findings indicate that experience likely stressful adolescents. Therefore, more research risk protective factors needed. also suggest preventative interventions should based gender-specific patterns
